News Release

11th November 2008

LICHFIELD MYSTERIES COMPETITION

Michael Fabricant is backing a new music competition sponsored by the Lichfield Mysteries. "The Lichfield Mysteries are becoming an integral part of the Lichfield calendar" says Michael. "They bring tourists to our City and much added colour to our historic streets and Cathedral Close.

"I hope that local students 18 or under who are budding Lloyd-Webbers will compose music for 'The Entry into Jerusalem' and for 'Doomsday' and make a mark on the cultural heritage of Staffordshire".

Mike Swallow of The Lichfield Mysteries asks: "Do you have musical talent? Are you interested in composing music? If so, and you will be 18 or under on 5 July 2009, then you could win the Lichfield Mysteries Composition Challenge and the chance to have your composition performed to over 1000 people in Lichfield Cathedral and Lichfield City Centre in the 2009 Lichfield Mysteries community theatre project.

"The Mysteries are looking for new music for two of the 26 plays which will be performed on 4/5 July 2009, "the Entry into Jerusalem" and "Doomsday". The music can be in any style as long as it reflects the story of the play and any instrumentation (including voices) may be used as long as it is suitable to the performance venues. Students may choose to compose for either or both of the plays. Group compositions will be accepted.

"Staffordshire Schools have already been circulated but the Mysteries organisers are anxious to include any budding composers who may be at private schools, working, or at school outside the County.

"The Mysteries' professional Musical Director will oversee the performances of the winning entries and work with the composer(s) and cast in rehearsal."

Details of the Composition Challenge and an entry form can be found on the Mysteries website www.lichfieldmysteries.co.uk. Closing date is 13 February 2009.
