News Release

16th February 2007

AMBULANCE SERVICES TO MERGE UNDER FALSE PRETENCES [2 .....continued]

Further to the News Release issued earlier today concentrating on 'Criterion 1', Michael Fabricant also says: "As well as the speed of emergency response, Criterion 1, the other major criterion is number 5: the 'return of spontaneous circulation' (ROSC). This highlights the fact that in Staffordshire, the Ambulance Service resuscitates and delivers to hospital alive 60% of patients who have effectively died whereas West Midlands can only achieve 35% with the national average being 26%. This is a national tragedy which must not be repeated in Staffordshire.

"It is pointless getting to patients within 8 minutes if you then watch them die. The irony of the Government's targets is that if a paramedic arrives on scene within 8 minutes and the patient dies it is seen as a success but if he arrives in 9 minutes and successfully resuscitates the patient it is seen as failure. This is the sort of nonsense we are up against" Michael adds.
