News Release

17th October 2005

AVIAN ('BIRD') FLU

Michael Fabricant has tabled urgent Parliamentary Questions today to ask about the availability of retro-virus vaccine and regular flu vaccine in the West Midlands and Staffordshire.

With the Government's Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, saying that up to 50,000 people could die in the UK with an outbreak of Bird Flu, Michael Fabricant says it is important that adequate stocks of vaccine are available. "Foot and mouth disease caught the Government on the hop. They cannot get it wrong again this time. People weakened by a bout of regular flu will be at particular risk with a bird flu pandemic. It is important that everyone at-risk from the effects of normal flu receive vaccinations." says Michael.

"And if there is a bird flu pandemic, retro-virus will slow down the worst effects of the flu. If the current bird flu mutates into a flu that can be transferred between people, it is vital that a specific bird flu vaccine is quickly developed and distributed to doctors locally".
