News Release

25th January 2005

FOOD SUPPLEMENTS AND VITAMINS

Following many letters and petitions he has received from constituents throughout the Lichfield constituency, Michael Fabricant today voted in favour of the Parliamentary Motion: That this House regrets the passing of the Food Supplements Regulations (England) 2003; mandates the Government to use the UK Presidency to renegotiate the Food Supplements Directive with the European Union; and indicates a willingness to repeal the regulations if the renegotiation does not reach a satisfactory compromise to protect the interests of consumers and manufacturers in the United Kingdom.

"I have been appalled that the Government has enthusiastically supported the Brussels directive to stop the sale of certain food supplements and vitamins when no health hazard has been suggested" says Michael Fabricant. "Shops like Holland and Barratt in Lichfield have been prevented from selling useful vitamins to pregnant mums and others because of Tony Blair's nanny state attitude towards this. I am disappointed that this cross-party motion supported by Conservatives, Plaid Cymru and some Northern Ireland MPs was opposed by Labour MPs. Don't any of them take vitamins?" Michael asks.
