"DON'T FINE 19 INCH PARKERS" SAYS MP

Michael Fabricant is urging Lichfield District and other Staffordshire councils not to enforce a new law which would fine drivers £100 if they park more than 50cm (just 19 inches) from the kerb. "While I accept that bad parking can increase traffic congestion, the '19 inch rule' is just plain ridiculous" says Michael Fabricant. "Motorists are hard pressed as it is with the highest fuel prices in Europe if not the world. Nineteen inches is just too short. I would be happier if the Government had set the limit at 1 metre or even 3 feet, but they did not. I know many elderly people who need their cars for shopping who will be very worried if they thought that they could be fined £100".

Councils will have to apply to the Government under the provisions of the Traffic Management Act when it becomes law for permission to apply these fines. "I hope that Lichfield will not make any such application", adds Michael.
