News Release

15th September 2003

SWEDEN'S EURO VOTE

Michael Fabricant today welcomed Sweden's 'Nej till Euron' - 'No to the Euro' vote. "I am sure that our Labour Government will have taken note of this" says Michael Fabricant. "The Swedes like the British are not convinced of the economic benefits of joining the Euro.

"Meanwhile, I am still pressing the Government to conduct some analysis of how well Britain does out of our membership of the European Union. The Government says there are huge economic benefits making us wealthier and creating 300,000 jobs. If this is true, that is good news. But as the Government has now admitted that no financial and economic analysis has been made of our EU membership since the early 90s, how can they possibly know? A recent US Government analysis claimed our EU membership is not financially benefiting Britain and is costing us around US $40 billion each and every year: equivalent to our doubling the State Pension overnight. Surely this can't be true? It's time the British Government conducted its own analysis, make it public, and set the record straight. And we should conduct this analysis every four or five years because circumstances change over time. Isn't that just being businesslike with taxpayer's money?" Michael asks.
