News Release

10th January 2003

SAFEWAY TAKE-OVER BY MORRISONS

Michael Fabricant has written to Sir Ken Morrison, Chairman of Morrisons which has just bought the Safeway supermarket chain for £2.9 billion, asking whether jobs will be safe at the two Safeway stores in Lichfield and Burntwood.

"I understand that some 1,200 non-store jobs will be cut, as the merged group seeks to eliminate overlaps" says Michael Fabricant. "But Sir Ken has already said that Morrisons plan to create 3,000 - 4,000 new jobs over the next 12 months.

"Nevertheless, I do understand and appreciate that some of my constituents work at Safeway and they will be concerned about their future job prospects. I hope that Sir Ken will be able to assure me that the long term future of the Safeway stores in Burntwood and Lichfield are assured.

"Besides, Safeway in Lichfield is my local supermarket so I have a personal interest in this matter too!"
