DEBATE ON FOX HUNTING

In the 3 votes tonight (Monday 18th March), Michael Fabricant voted (1) Against the maintenance of a self regulating fox hunting regime (i.e. against the status quo) and won. [Noes=401, Ayes=154] (2) For a licensing scheme for fox hunts and lost [Noes=371, Ayes=169] and (3) Against an all out ban on fox hunting and lost. [Noes=175, Ayes=386]

Michael Fabricant says: "I have never supported unregulated fox hunting and so I voted with the majority against the present position. But I do believe that foxes have to be controlled and a licensing scheme seems the most rational way of achieving this. Alternative ways of culling foxes are less humane. Nevertheless, the Government has chosen to end fox hunting in Britain and our countryside will suffer as a consequence.

"But it does seem extraordinary to me that with street crime being at the highest level ever and the elderly being evicted from nursing homes, Tony Blair has made it his Government's priority to ban fox hunting. I believe it will be a decision he will live to regret."
