News Release 11th March 2002CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY ASSOCIATIONMichael Fabricant has been invited to become, and he has now accepted to be, a Patron of 'The Constitutional Monarchy Association' and joins Sir Cliff Richard and others in the list of Patrons in support of HM The Queen. "The invitation to become a Patron of the Association came out of the blue" says Michael Fabricant. "I understand it came about because I have argued in Parliament for the National Anthem to be played when BBC1 closes down for the night and switches to News 24 just as Radio 4 plays the National Anthem before it switches to BBC World Service. I also think we should play the National Anthem in theatres where there is an orchestra or band. I am amazed that our national opera house, which after all is called the 'Royal' Opera House, does not play the National Anthem after performances. "They do it in European countries and the do it in the US. They follow our tradition. So why have we dumped it? The National Anthem not only shows loyalty to the Queen it demonstrates loyalty to our nation. It has come to a fine thing when British football fans abroad sing 'God Save the Queen', but major institutions at home, like the BBC, refuse to do it here!"
