News Release

25th June 2001

DOG AND CAT FUR

Michael Fabricant and a small group of other MPs from the Labour Party and Liberal-Democrats are calling on the Government to implement a ban on the importation of products made with dog and cat fur. This follows a similar decision made by the United States Government.

"Dog and cat fur is being used on a whole range of imported clothing ranging from hooded anoraks to fur coats and hats. Often domestic animals are killed specifically for this purpose", says Michael Fabricant.

"The UK Government should now follow the example set by the United States and ban the importation of all such products. In addition, we should also impose a ban on the sale of such products in the event that they are made within the United Kingdom. I will be calling on the Government to try and persuade Brussels to implement similar regulations throughout the European Union."
